Jislaaik! Some Car Brands Are Getting *Befok* in 2026 – And You Won't Believe Who's Failing
Forget load shedding, the biggest shocker in 2026 isn't a power outage – it's the automotive bloodbath happening right now, with some brands surging while others are circling the drain. Bru, the Q2 2026 numbers are in, and let me tell you, it's a jol. Some of the big names are seriously getting kak’d, while others are laughing all the way to the bank. We're talking sedan comebacks, EV faceplants, and luxury brands feeling the pinch. So, buckle up, because this is the auto report you need to know. ## Jeep's Grand Plan Seems to Be Working (But the Rest of Jeep… Eish) Okay, let's start with Jeep. They’ve clearly figured something out with the Grand Wagoneer. After a refresh for 2026 and some smart re-configuring of the lineup, sales are up a massive 57 percent year-over-year in Q2, hitting 14,905 units sold. Through the first half of the year, they’ve moved a lekker 30,147 of those behemoths – an 80 percent jump. That’s a proper win. But… *eish*. The rest of Jeep? Not so much. Overall, Jeep sales were *down* 5 percent in Q2. The Compass, Wrangler, and even the Grand Cherokee all took a beating. It’s like they’re carrying the Grand Wagoneer on their backs. You gotta wonder if they’re spreading themselves too thin. It's a bit like Checkers trying to be everything to everyone – sometimes you need to focus, bru. ## Minivan Mania? Chrysler's Pacifica is Actually Thriving Jislaaik! A minivan doing well? In this SUV-obsessed world? You bet. Chrysler’s Pacifica is defying all expectations. They shifted a whopping 65,669 Pacificas in Q2 – a 27 percent increase year-over-year. And that momentum continued, with 125,522 sold in the first half – *also* up 27 percent. Apparently, that 2027 refresh, with its more modern front-end design, is hitting the spot. Who knew a practical family vehicle could still turn heads? Maybe those Durban family holidays are driving the demand? ## Sedans Are Back, Baby! (And Toyota & Honda Are Leading the Charge) Okay, this is a surprise. Remember when everyone said sedans were dead and buried? Well, they were speaking too soon. There's a proper resurgence happening, and Toyota and Honda are leading the charge. The Honda Accord saw a 42 percent increase in Q2, pushing past 90,000 units sold through the first half. The Civic is also doing well, up 3 percent on the year, and the Acura Integra jumped a massive 57 percent year-over-year in Q2. Toyota isn’t slacking either. Camry sales jumped 19 percent in Q2, with 179,044 units sold in the first half. The Corolla is up 7 percent in Q2. And even Hyundai and Kia are getting in on the action, with the Sonata up 31 percent (22,510 units sold in Q2) and the K5 up 4 percent. Even the Lexus IS, after a light refresh for 2026, saw a huge 78 percent jump in Q2 with 9026 units sold. It’s a lekker turnaround for a segment everyone wrote off. ## Ford's F-Series is Feeling the Heat – And It's Not Just the Sun Now, let's talk about the king. The Ford F-Series. It’s still a beast, but it’s starting to feel the heat. Sales slid 11 percent in Q2 and 13 percent so far this year. Ford blames supplier issues stemming from a fire at a Novelis aluminum plant. That's kak luck, to put it mildly. Other Ford models aren’t exactly shining either – the Expedition is down 27 percent, the Ranger down 10 percent, and the Bronco Sport down 7 percent. Even the Mustang Mach-E took a 31 percent hit in Q2. They're also feeling the sting of discontinuing the Escape, with sales plummeting from 82,589 to just 24,112. This is a serious blip for the blue oval. ## Electric Shock: Chevy's EVs Are Taking a Serious Knock Remember all the hype around Chevy’s EVs? Well, the reality check has arrived. The Equinox EV, which was the third-best selling EV in 2025, took a massive 62 percent drop in Q2, and a 41 percent decline through the first half. It’s now being outsold by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Toyota bZ. The Blazer EV is in even worse shape, down 68 percent in Q2 and a shocking 75 percent on the year. Even the Silverado EV, which didn’t exactly set the world on fire initially, was down 26 percent in Q2 and 33 percent through the first half. This is a serious setback for GM’s EV ambitions. It's like trying to braai in the rain – just doesn't work. ## Luxury Pain: Cadillac's Sales Continue to Slide Things aren't looking lekker for Cadillac either. They're down 19 percent in Q2 and 22 percent in the first half. The loss of the XT4 and XT6 models – which combined for nearly 9000 sales in Q2 last year – is a major factor. The aging XT5 is also struggling, down 10 percent in Q2, and even the Escalade saw a 6 percent dip. The Lyriq EV also dropped 16 percent. While the Optiq and Vistiq EVs are seeing some sales growth, it’s not nearly enough to offset the losses elsewhere. ## Alfa Romeo: Is This the Beginning of the End? Okay, this is the grim one. Alfa Romeo's outlook in the US is… bleak. Down 32 percent in Q2, with only 828 sales. Down 45 percent on the year, with a total of just 1747 units sold through the first half. That’s less than the US$130,000 Cadillac Escalade IQ sold in the last three months. With the next-generation Stelvio delayed and limited new models on the horizon, things are looking seriously dicey for the Italian marque. It's a sad state of affairs. So, what's the verdict? The automotive landscape is shifting, and quickly. Sedans are making a comeback, minivans are surprisingly resilient, and some legacy brands are facing serious challenges. If you’re in the market for a new car, do your homework. Don’t just go for the name you know. Consider your needs, your budget, and the long-term reliability of the vehicle. Right now, Toyota and Honda seem to be the safest bets. But here’s the big question: with electric vehicle sales faltering for some brands, is the EV revolution losing steam, or is this just a temporary setback?
